Anita Dongre didn’t let the fact that no women in her family had stepped out to work or her family’s apprehensions get in the way of her desire to create her own fashion label. She launched AND Designs from her balcony and then a small workshop in Dharavi with seven tailors in 1995 with the brand’s first store, a 300 sq ft outlet coming up in Mumbai’s first mall, Crossroads, in 1999. Today, her collections are currently available at 220 exclusive brand stores, over 596 multi-brand store formats in 85 Indian cities and even across the border in places like Mauritius and Dubai. Dongre has smartly tailored her business so that there is something for everyone at the House Of Anita Dongre -- five brands including AND, Global Desi, her signature label, Anita Dongre Bridal Couture, her jewellery brand, PINKCITY and Grassroots (a sustainable luxury brand which seeks to revive Indian crafts) -- at price points that appeal to the middle class and the uber rich.
